Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2009 Dodge Caliber

Today on this 2009 Dodge Caliber. We will be installing wiring harness part number 118446. We are here at the rear of the vehicle and the connection points for our wiring harness are going to be located directly behind the tail light assemblies on both the drivers and passengers sides. The first thing we need to do is go ahead and remove those from the vehicle. To do that, you will see here on the in board side of the tail light you have got two push pins. We want to go ahead and release those first. We can do that by just using a flat bladed screwdriver here. Getting inside the corner of the section here and we will just kind of work that back and forth until we get the push pin to release here. And then we will just want to gently rock back and forth to release the out board clips that are inside there. This larger port is the one that we are going to be using for our T connector here. Start by releasing the red clip here at the top.

Then we want to press the black tab here and that will allow us to pull the two pieces apart. What we will do is take our harness and we are going to start the connector that are going to be using on the driver side. It is the one with the yellow and brown wires on it. We will take and go ahead and plug our connector in line. One end will connect on to the back side of the tail light here and the other end will connect to the vehicle side. On this side as well we have got a white wire with a ring terminal on it. That is our ground wire. And we will need to go ahead and ground that to the back side of the housing area here. We are going to do that using the self tapping screw that is provided with our installation kit. And next we will want to take the other connector with the green wire. That is going to be routed between the body and the bumper here. This slight opening. We are going to route it down and over to our passenger side tail light assembly.

So I am going to go ahead and take and connect our red and our black wires. To connect the two we will be using the butt connector which is provided again with our wiring harness. The butt connector will simply strip back a little bit of the jacketing from our wires and get a pair of crimpers and crimp those right down. Make sure you have got a tight connection there and we will go ahead and wrap that with some electrical tape. And next we will want to take the other connector, with the green wire that is going to be routed between the body and the bumper here, this slight opening. We are going to route it down and over to our passenger side tail light assembly. It is a pretty tight fit in there so it may not be a bad idea to get a piece of fish wire or something to go ahead and feed that through to help us pull all of those components down. I am going to keep the box up here for the time being just to show that on the back side we have got double sided tape so we do want to adhere this to a metal surface here. We can clean off the surface right here and go ahead and adhere it just like so. Okay, then we can go ahead and put our driver side tail light back on. All right, underneath the vehicle we will start with routing the 4-pole in the passenger side connector. I am going to take it and actually feed it over the top of the bumper bracket here and that will keep it from hanging down.
